Outside corner:
Left-hand piece =
Bottom edge against fence
Right-hand piece =
Top edge against fence

Inside corner:
Left-hand piece =
Top edge against fence
Right-hand piece =
Bottom edge against fence

Get a minus number as a result?
Then you have an outside corner,  you still set the miter saw the same but you keep the opposite side.

Another option for onsite work: 

Get the kit, I wish I would have bought it with the hard case!

Plug in the spring angle then wall anlge and it will calculate  the compound cut for you!!!

The most common spring angles for crown mouldings are 45/45 and 52/38.
52° from the ceiling 38° from the wall.
